This week, I had a powerful moment that highlighted the importance of simple connections in our communities. While volunteering at a local support group, I encountered a child who was in distress—his embarrassment morphed into anger. The cause of his turmoil? He was hungry and didn’t know how to ask for help.

Witnessing a child suffer in such a way is heartbreaking. Hunger in children can not only impede their physical growth but also hinder their ability to learn and thrive.

Noticing the child's discomfort, I approached him with care, making sure he felt acknowledged and respected. Children often feel ashamed to admit they are hungry, and pride might stop them from seeking assistance or utilizing food resources available to them, such as local food pantries.

I shared with him that asking for help is a display of strength, not a sign of weakness. We talked about the meals many schools provide, which are designed to combat hunger during school hours. I mentioned specific food pantries nearby that offer nutritious meals and grocery items to families in need. Knowing that these resources were just a phone call away and hearing that many people experience similar challenges shifted his perspective.

Once he realized that seeking help wasn’t something to hide, his demeanor brightened. It was enlightening to see him embrace the idea that accessing help was a step towards a healthier and more fulfilling life.

Here’s an important takeaway: Hungry children face significant challenges when it comes to their focus and learning in school. Their basic need for nutrition plays a crucial role in their academic and social development. Studies show that children who experience consistent hunger tend to have lower test scores and poorer overall health.
